FAQs

Whole nutmeg retains its essential oils — myristicin, elemicin and safrole — far longer than ground nutmeg. Once ground, these volatile oils dissipate rapidly. A freshly grated pinch of nutmeg gives an aroma and depth that pre-ground powder simply cannot match. Buy whole and grate as needed for the best results.

Nutmeg has been used in Ayurvedic and traditional medicine for centuries as a natural sleep aid. A pinch of nutmeg powder in warm milk (Jaiphal doodh) before bed is a traditional Indian remedy for promoting restful sleep. Its myristicin content may have mild sedative properties when consumed in small culinary amounts.

Both come from the same tree (Myristica fragrans). Nutmeg is the inner seed; mace (Javitri) is the red lacy covering (aril) around the seed. Mace has a lighter, more delicate flavour — often described as a more refined version of nutmeg. Both are used in cooking but mace is rarer and more expensive.

Culinary quantities — a pinch to 1/4 teaspoon per dish — are completely safe and beneficial. Large amounts of nutmeg (several teaspoons or tablespoons) can cause toxicity due to myristicin. Stick to normal recipe amounts and you have nothing to worry about.
