FAQs
Cloves contain eugenol — a natural analgesic and antiseptic compound. Applying a clove or a drop of clove oil directly to an aching tooth temporarily numbs pain and kills bacteria. Eugenol is actually used in dental products and root canal treatments as a natural numbing agent.
Add 2–3 whole cloves to hot oil or ghee at the start of cooking — they infuse the oil beautifully. Use in biryani, pulao, curries, chai and pickles. Include in garam masala. Remove whole cloves before serving as biting into one gives an intense burst of flavour. Use sparingly — cloves are very potent.
For culinary use, 2–5 cloves per day is generally considered safe and beneficial. Clove is very concentrated — consuming large quantities of clove oil can be harmful. For everyday wellness, adding 2–3 cloves to your morning chai or cooking provides adequate benefits without excess.
Fresh high-quality cloves should be dark brown, plump and feel slightly oily to the touch. When pressed or scratched, they should release a strong, sharp eugenol fragrance. Inferior or old cloves look pale, dry and shrunken with a faint smell — a sign that the essential oils have dissipated.
